REDUCE BOTTLE AND PACK WEIGHT!

27/03/2008

Induction heat sealing helps in reduction of pack and bottle weight!

By Richard Bull, Managing Director Enercon Industries

For many years now, the milk industry have taken great advantage of foil sealing, which allowed them to reduce closure weight and get rid of the tear band, and reduce bottle pack weight.

Richard Bull, Managing Director of Enercon Industries recalls how the induction heat sealing process has facilitated this; as well as improved storage and shipment capabilities from the dairy to the store and from the store into the home. “All in all, it’s been a resounding success”. He said.

Quite a few other industries have taken up foil sealing for varying reasons, the main one was product integrity, but now they have noticed a vast gain to be made in reducing cap and bottle weight if they foil seal. The awareness of these benefits in the UK is increasing, and currently it is topically correct to address green issues. In Enercon we have been pushing for these things to happen over the last 30 years.

With the massive growth of supermarkets in the UK, foil sealing has become an every day thing. Pack weight is being monitored and reduced. However this is not the case across Europe in general, but fortunately for us in the UK, the British Government have taken to heart the necessity of improving transport quality. By induction heat sealing, they are actively helping to create an awareness across Europe on the benefits of hermetically sealing containers, which will reduce closure and bottle weight, and subsequently the amount of transported product - which will help reduce the carbon footprint.

As a bi-product of this, freshness will be sealed in, shelf life extended, transport conditions improved from the car to the users fridge, as well as reducing the amount of plastic being used and transported around. Another consideration is the amount of waste created in production as the induction heat sealing process can aid contract filling companies to reduce rejects on the production line.

There is however a ‘missing link’ between the large outlets, food producers, packers and the machinery manufacturers. They all communicate their vested interest, but they miss the main point, they want to be seen to be good and actively reducing pack weight, but very few of them have 3600 control over what happens. Enercon are taking an active part in trying to focus the attention from the Government to the food supplier, from the packer to the component manufacturer and machinery manufacturer, so that a co-ordinated approach can be developed.

The issues are huge; within the UK milk industry alone, over 2 billion bottles a year are sealed and the savings have proven to be phenomenal. Many more packs, like milk, can be reduced dramatically if the large groups and supermarkets could collaborate, rather than in isolation.
