FMS-Flexible Bag Headspace Analyzer

The FMS-Flexible Bag Analyzer is a non-destructive gas analyzer for monitoring headspace oxygen concentrations in sealed transparent flexible bags and pouches. This compact benchtop instrument utilizes a patented laser absorption technique developed with funding from the Food and Drug Administration.

Light from a near-infrared diode laser is tuned to match an internal absorption frequency of the oxygen molecule and passed through the empty headspace above the product. The amount of laser light absorbed is proportional to the oxygen concentration in the headspace. The measurement method is rapid and non-destructive.  These characteristics allow for multiple measurements on the same sample enabling the accurate monitoring of the oxidation of a single sample over time.  Because the sample is not destroyed there are no waste disposal issues and potentially valuable product can be saved for other tests.

The analyzer is a robust solid state device and is straightforward to use.  Operators do not require special expertise to run the system meaning the accuracy of the measurements does not depend on operator skill.

Applications.

The Flexible Bag Headspace Analyzer can be used for development & QC laboratory applications as well as for at-line in-process control of headspace oxygen levels in production. Systems can be permanently situated in laboratories for product development, release testing, and QC investigations or implemented at-line in production for in-process monitoring and troubleshooting activities.

VISTA Oxygen Inspection Machine

Automated Headspace Inspection Machine.
The VISTA Headspace Inspection platform is an automated in-line 100% inspection machine designed to simultaneously monitor oxygen, pressure, and moisture levels in sealed parenteral containers. The patented machine platform was originally developed with funding from the Food and Drug Administration and received the 2004 Parenteral Drug Association New Innovative Technology Award.

Configuration for Oxygen Only
The automated headspace machine platform can be configured for headspace oxygen inspection only.  The VISTA/O In-Line Oxygen Inspection System is an in-line, 100% inspection and rejection system designed to monitor oxygen levels in sealed parenteral containers. The VISTA/O System is capable of directly measuring oxygen concentrations in the headspace of optically transparent packages stoppered under an inert atmosphere (nitrogen, argon).  Applications include leak testing of lyophilized and liquid product, and purge performance monitoring during the filling of oxygen-sensitive product.

Light from a near-infrared laser is tuned to match an internal absorption frequency of the oxygen molecule and passed through a container in the headspace above the product. The amount of laser light absorbed is proportional to the headspace oxygen concentration. This measurement method allows for the rapid analysis of 100% of product while reducing testing costs. Up to four oxygen sensors can be mounted on the machine depending on the required line speed and sensitivity.

The VISTA/THC System is capable of directly measuring oxygen concentrations, total pressure/vacuum levels, and moisture levels in the headspace of optically transparent packages.  Applications include 100% container closure integrity testing of lyophilized and liquid product, headspace oxygen monitoring during the filling of oxygen-sensitive product, and 100% moisture determination of freeze dried product.

Light from near-infrared lasers is tuned to match an internal absorption frequency of the oxygen and water molecules and passed through a container in the headspace above the product. The amount of laser light absorbed is proportional to the headspace oxygen and moisture concentrations and the broadening of the absorption profiles gives the headspace pressure. Multiple sensors are mounted on the machine for the simultaneous inspection of all headspace parameters.
