Braskem commemorates tenth anniversary of the start of Green Plastic research

The biopolymer is currently used in 150 brands on five continents and its usage is growing in packaging in various market segments

Ten years after the start of research into I´m green™ Green Polyethylene, at the Technology and Innovation Centre at Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, Braskem is reaping the fruits of its pioneering endeavours with the expanded presence of its renewable-origin polymer on the international market. Produced from sugar cane, the biopolymer allows for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and is today used in 150 brands in Europe, the United States, Asia, Africa and South America. Green Plastic’s various applications will be presented by Braskem at Interpack, from May 4 to 10 in Dusseldorf, in Hall 9 - G15.

Among the partnerships which have contributed to the biopolymer’s consolidation on international markets is the one set up with Tetra Pak®, the world’s biggest supplier of long-life packaging, which since 2012 has been using the I´m green™ Green Polyethylene in its closures. Two years later, in 2014, Braskem’s Green Plastic was incorporated as a component part of Tetra Pak®’s layered carton packaging.

Also in the drinks sector, Japanese company Suntory in 2016 started using I´m green™ Green Polyethylene for the closures of its 550ml “Suntory Aso Tennensui”, mineral water bottles, with an estimated production of 26 million annually. The product will be displayed on Braskem’s stand during Interpack. The same year, Woolworths, one of South Africa’s main supermarket chains, announced it would use the renewable resin in its milk packaging.

“Braskem has the capacity to produce 200,000 tonnes of Green Polyethylene a year, which makes this the first polyethylene from a renewable origin to be produced on an industrial scale worldwide. We are investing increasingly in innovation, one highlight being our development of projects using raw materials from renewable sources,” says Gustavo Sergi, director of Renewable Chemicals at Braskem.

Boticario Group, internationally acclaimed in the retail beauty sector, has also started using packaging material that is 100% from renewable sources in its “Cuide-se Bem” (Take great care of yourself) product line. This is the first time that Boticario Group has used I´m green™ Green Polyethylene for all items in a complete product range. With this line, Boticario won an award in Organic Monitor’s Sustainable Beauty Awards.

The award is a recognition of the efforts being made by the cosmetics and beauty industry worldwide to make their business increasingly sustainable. To enable the consumer to recognise its product qualities at the point of sale, Boticario has created a “Uses Plastic of Vegetal Origin” icon attesting to the origin of the packaging.
