Balingen, 31 March 2014 – At Interpack from 8 to 14 May, Bizerba will be presenting solutions for optimising quality and processes for the packaging industry under the theme of "Labelling Quality". In live presentations the manufacturer will illustrate how customers can design and print their labels quickly and effectively in accordance with the new EU labelling directive. In addition, Bizerba will be presenting labelling machines, control systems and software, which enable complete monitoring of packaging quality, reduce the number of product returns and strengthen the brand image.
The packaging industry is currently adjusting its packaging processes to meet the requirements of the new EU Food Declaration. Software, which allows equipment to be individually programmed and labels to be designed according to the EU Directives, plays a key role here. In live presentations on the Bizerba trade fair stand, customers can experience how the new requirements can be implemented with label templates in different languages. The users are assisted with data entry and the automatic calculation of GDA (Guideline Daily Amount) tables and nutritional values, for example.
"We have developed a system solution for all data logistics, with which industrial companies can meet the new declaration requirements without in-house development costs," explains Dieter Conzelmann, Director of Industry Solutions at Bizerba. "Depending on the destination country, users benefit from automatic conversion of the values to be shown and can also define their own calculation methods."
Bizerba provides labels for all quality and safety standards. Using various input and output, editing and design functions, fields can be arranged, combined, formatted and aligned on a PC. Text, logo, allergy and nutritional information and QR-Codes can be effortlessly moved into the right position.
More space for new content: the C-wrap label
The GLM-Ievo high-performance price labelling machine weighs and labels up to 200 packets per minute. It also has a camera inspection system for packaging quality control and automatically reconfigures itself when the product changes by means of a coded label roll. At high speed, the packages are fed in, weighed and aligned exactly according to the packaging size, labelled and checked by the integrated Vision System.
Anyone who does not want to wait until 2016 to integrate nutrition tables, but intends to do so in the next few months, faces the challenge that many labels do not have enough space for the necessary information. This is why Bizerba will be presenting the integrated C-wrap applicator at Interpack. With it, all contents can be shown on just one label, which encloses the product on three sides. "Thanks to the printing on the side, the consumer always knows what the product is, even when it is stacked on the shelves. Important information about possible allergenic ingredients, for instance, can be recognised at first glance," says Conzelmann.
The integrated BVS-Ievo (Bizerba Vision System) automatically checks the label position and text, film colour and seal. If required, it ejects defective packages from production using a pusher. This means manufacturers can carry out complete quality control, reduce the number of product returns and, in doing so, indirectly strengthen their brand image
The wide variety of information provided by the company over and beyond the label is becoming increasingly important for the creation of transparency. This is particularly true because the space on the label is limited. Solutions like reading a QR code on a package with a mobile phone are increasingly in demand. Bizerba has the know-how to print QR codes with information such as the production date, origin and nutritional information etc., and to have them prepared by an external data provider such as fTrace, so that they represent added value for the consumer.
Process optimisation using KPIs
For certain types of machines, the maintenance costs exceed the capital cost after just a few years of production. This is because the majority of the Life Cycle Costs (LCC) are made up of invisible costs such as maintenance work and replacement parts. The demand for product-related maintenance services is steadily increasing as a result. Bizerba offers comprehensive maintenance and servicing schemes. Furthermore, at Interpack the company will also be presenting a system with which it is possible to calculate the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of a production line. The software calculates the following OEE factors: availability, performance and quality. Measures to increase efficiency can then be easily derived from these key indicators. Today, values of 40 to 60 percent are already generally accepted. Only a few companies achieve a value of 85 percent. In addition to the existing status, the solution also highlights the potential for optimisation.
Intelligence in production
Technologies from the end-user sector continue to drive the development of packaging technology. At the trade fair, Bizerba will show price labellers that automatically or manually send backup copies to the cloud for archiving. This enables simple restoration of backups, so that new equipment with the same or similar configuration can be swiftly put into operation and backups can be centrally managed.
