Some love it and some hate it. But one thing is clear: no-one can escape the Christmas period. So why not just enjoy it? And what tastier way to count the days until Christmas than with an Advent Calendar? In these days of DIY there seems to be a great deal of pressure to make your own Advent Calendar for your loved ones. Anyone collecting loo rolls over the past few weeks in anticipation still gets off fairly lightly. Painting them green or sticking them together and arranging them into a Christmas tree – is something really anyone can do. And the paper bag variation is also quickly achieved: decorate each bag with some Xmas stickers and hang them along a piece of string using simple wooden clothes pegs. The biggest challenges are sure to lie in home-sewn, perfectly formed little bags and sacks that dangle in the bedroom from white and red cords or home-made woodwork pieces that assemble into whole villages. 24 little houses under whose roofs surprises await you – don’t forget the church with the clock tower.

But there is another way. The classic of all classics – i.e. the Advent Calendar you buy yourself – is still sure to be the chocolate calendar. Hidden behind a wintry scene on a cardboard cover with 24 perforated little doors are cavities filled with chocolate figures. 45 centimetres long, 7.6 centimetres high and 4.8 centimetres deep – these are the handy measurements of the Advent Calendar. Hidden in the long, narrow box are 24 little chocolate cartons that push through from one side to the other making the calendar extremely practical as it can simply be refilled next year. Remaining true to its Swiss roots the box is decorated with a stylised Alpine panorama. The Advent Calendar is manufactured in one piece with the chocolatier’s corporate colours on the inside. The smooth outer surface is covered with a matt aqueous coating and then punched, folded, stuck and laminated to take on its final shape.
