Domino Introduces the Gx Series PRO Printhead to Support the Industry Transition to 2D Coding

Ahead of interpack 2026, Domino Printing Sciences (Domino), a global expert in advanced variable data printing solutions, has introduced the Gx‑Series PRO Printhead. The new thermal inkjet (TIJ) solution is designed to help manufacturers prepare for the industry’s transition to GS1 Digital Link and variable 2D codes.

As retailers and supply chains push for greater transparency and accuracy, the move to GS1 2D coding has become one of the most significant developments for packaging identification. Manufacturers now require coding systems that can deliver larger print areas, higher contrast, and higher‑speed performance, all while maintaining accuracy on increasingly complex production lines.

The Gx‑Series PRO Printhead has been developed around three core priorities:

  • Waste reduction – supports applications such as dynamic pricing, automated expiry checks, and faster, more accurate recalls by embedding best‑before and batch information directly in each 2D code. Combined with Domino Automation, its centralised label management and automated deployment software, manufacturers and retailers can ensure codes are correct before print, reduce product and label waste, and mitigate the significant financial, regulatory, and reputational risks of product recalls.
  • Speed – delivering crisp, high‑contrast GS1 2D codes at industrial line speeds, supported by seamless integration with Domino’s R‑Series smart vision system for automated inline inspection to check every code and detect issues before they impact production.
  • Compliance – helping food manufacturers adhere to legislation, Domino is developing both water-based and solvent-based food packaging compliant inks. Domino is leading the way with food packaging inks manufactured in accordance with EuPIA GMP.

With a 23 mm print height, high optical density, high resolution and long throw distance, the Gx‑Series PRO Printhead is ideal for high‑throughput food packaging applications, fresh and chilled products – including meat, fish, and poultry – pharmaceuticals, and direct‑to‑box printing whilst also having significant appeal for general purpose applications.

James Gibbins, Global Thermal Inkjet Product Manager, Domino, commented:

“The GS1 Digital Link transition is arguably one of the most significant shifts in variable data coding. With our new Gx‑Series PRO Printhead and our R‑Series vision system, we provide manufacturers with a simple, fully integrated solution for coding and verification – all from a single trusted supplier.”

The Gx‑Series PRO Printhead builds on Domino’s long‑established expertise in TIJ printing. The result is a more flexible, optimised, and future‑ready coding platform that supports customers through a period of rapid technological and regulatory change.

Meet Domino at interpack 2026
