Innovation in Sustainable Food Packaging

Innovation in the sustainable food packaging sector has a new date in Euskadi

On 20 November, the Ilgner Building in Barakaldo will host the 3rd Meeting for Innovation in Food Packaging, organised by ontzi | Basque Food Packaging Innovation Hub, together with Basque Food Cluster and Fundación Elika.

This event will bring together companies, technology centres and professionals from the sector to share progress, discuss the new challenges of sustainable food packaging and continue driving collaboration between the food and packaging industries.

At Grupo Tav Food, we are joining this drive towards a more responsible future, where innovation, efficiency and environmental commitment are setting a new path in the food packaging sector.

Social awareness driving the sector towards a sustainable model

In recent years, due to growing social awareness and increased sensitivity towards issues such as global warming, there has been a strategic shift in different business models. The adoption of new consumption habits by society has led to a renewal of both consumption and production models, with the goal of reducing environmental impact.

To adapt to this new model, companies must implement sustainability programmes, investing in the development of new creative and innovative ideas that enable more sustainable practices in each business sector.

In the case of the food packaging sector, there are numerous companies that share this sense of social responsibility, developing innovative solutions that not only protect and preserve food, but also leave a sustainable footprint while promoting a circular economy and the use of biodegradable materials.

Key changes in the food packaging sector

Collective awareness has been crucial in driving transformation in the food packaging sector, since it is estimated that the food industry uses 40% of the plastic produced worldwide.

This is why the leading companies in the sector have made it a priority to seek new alternatives to replace materials with a negative environmental impact with those that are biodegradable, compostable and recyclable, such as:

  • Bioplastics: manufactured from renewable resources such as corn starch, sugarcane or algae.
  • Agricultural waste: packaging developed from rice husks, sugarcane bagasse and banana leaves, giving new life to by-products and reducing waste.
  • Cellulose: packaging made mainly from wood fibres or recycled paper, providing a versatile eco-friendly solution, as it can be moulded into customised rigid shapes.

In addition, there have also been changes in the design and functionality of food packaging, with recyclability and reusability now being prioritised in order to facilitate a circular economy. This is the case, for example, of recyclable film packaging, a solution that enables a significant reduction in plastic use while maintaining food protection and quality.

Impact and benefits of sustainable innovation

Sustainable measures adopted by the food packaging sector have a direct impact on society, on companies and on the environment.

  • Reduced carbon footprint: by decreasing dependence on fossil-based plastics and optimising logistics to reduce the volume and weight of packaging.
  • Circular economy: aligned with a model that seeks to reduce, reuse and recycle materials in order to extend their useful life.
  • Reduced food waste: new packaging technologies help extend product shelf life, making it easier to distribute products to more distant markets.
  • Regulatory compliance: the use of new recyclable and biodegradable materials meets the increasingly stringent regulations governing plastic use in the food sector.
  • Stronger brand image: companies that make a genuine commitment to environmental care are better able to connect with a society that is increasingly seeking sustainable alternatives.

Grupo Tav Food, committed to sustainable development

At Grupo Tav Food, we are fully aware of the impact our activity has on society and the environment. This is why, for the past 20 years, we have worked diligently on developing new technologies and sustainable packaging alternatives that reduce negative environmental impact without sacrificing quality or functionality.

For this reason, at Grupo Tav Food we promote participation in events and trade fairs that drive innovation in the food packaging sector. We firmly believe that change in the food packaging industry is possible, and that staying up to date with the latest projects, solutions and experiences of all the companies actively involved in this sustainable transformation is essential.

On 20 November in Euskadi, the third edition of an event will be held in which major companies from the food packaging sector share their advances in innovation and promote change towards a more sustainable future. And at Grupo Tav Food, we want to be part of it.

3rd Meeting for Innovation in Sustainable Food Packaging

The event includes a congress section structured into four thematic blocks that address the main challenges and opportunities in the food packaging sector:

  • Presentation and debate on the national implementation of the new DRS (Deposit Return System).
  • The new SCRAP ecosystem: a comprehensive view of the new regulatory framework, with the participation of six of the main players in the system, who will share their perspectives and experiences.
  • Innovation in the food industry: major companies in the sector present their R&D projects.
  • Institutional recognition: the Basque Government acknowledges the daily efforts of companies through initiatives that promote more sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging models.

In addition, the event features an exhibition area showcasing the most innovative sustainable solutions on the market, offering attendees a practical overview of emerging trends in food packaging.
