As a global leader in automated cookie sandwich assembly equipment, MBD continues to advance the capabilities of its Cookie Capper platform. At this year’s Interpack, the company will host a dedicated technical session to introduce three newly enhanced features available on the Cookie Capper, addressing the most pressing challenges in biscuit sandwich production.
The session will feature video presentations and technical walkthroughs led by MBD sales engineers. A Cookie Capper will be on display at the booth, giving attendees a firsthand look at the machine layout, the deposit mechanism, and the integration points for each of the featured systems.
Phase Gate: Eliminating Manual Phasing
One of the most persistent challenges on high-speed cookie capping lines is keeping product properly phased - ensuring every cookie is oriented correctly as either a top or bottom biscuit. MBD’s Phase Gate system solves this automatically.
Located in the Infeed area above Rotodex 1, the Phase Gate uses overhead cameras to inspect each lane individually. The vision system identifies whether each cookie is a top or bottom biscuit. When an out-of-phase cookie is detected, the system actuates a pneumatic gate in that specific lane, holding the product for one indexing cycle before releasing it back into correct alignment.
The result: fully automated phasing correction that eliminates operator intervention and keeps production running at speed.
NOP/NOD Vision System: Smarter, Waste-Free Depositing
The upgraded No Product / No Deposit (NOP/NOD) system represents a major step forward in deposit accuracy and waste reduction. By tightly integrating a multi-camera vision system with per-lane pneumatic actuators, the Cookie Capper deposits filling only when product is confirmed present under the manifold.
Each production lane features an individually controlled pneumatic actuator driven by PLC logic and real-time vision feedback. Operators can dynamically assign cameras to lanes through the HMI and fine-tune per-lane deposit timing using the Deposit Station Weight Control screen. By adjusting the ON/OFF timing window for each lane, operators gain precise control over how much filling is deposited, enabling consistent sandwich weights across the entire belt width.
Camera recipes are pre-configured during factory testing and selectable per product recipe, ensuring fast changeovers and reliable performance across different biscuit types.
Downstream Reject: Automated Lane-Level Quality Control
Complementing the vision-based NOP/NOD system, MBD’s Downstream Reject feature provides an automated quality gate at the exit of the Cookie Capper. The system monitors production over a configurable number of machine cycles and, when quality criteria are not met, sends a targeted reject signal to downstream equipment for the specific lane where the issue was detected.
This ensures that only properly assembled, quality-inspected cookie sandwiches continue down the production line, reducing manual inspection burden and protecting brand quality standards.

These innovations will be presented during the Learn session on May 8. Attendees will explore each feature through video presentations and technical discussions with the MBD sales team, with the Cookie Capper on display as a reference for understanding how these systems integrate into the machine.
“We’ve designed these features to solve the real-world challenges our customers face every day on the production floor,” said our president, Jackson Mims. We look forward to walking our partners and visitors through what these capabilities can do for their lines.
