The award-winning Muoto Uncoated Fibre Series is expanding with a new line of moulded wood-fibre punnets designed for fresh fruits, berries, and vegetables. The launch marks a significant step toward offering scalable alternatives to single-use plastic packaging.
The first formats of two punnet sizes are designed for fresh food packaging. Market testing is planned for spring and summer 2026, targeting producers seeking plastic-free packaging solutions aligned with the EU’s forthcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Transitioning from current plastic packaging to fibre-based options, such Muoto punnets, could significantly cut the use of single-use plastics in retail.
“We welcome packers to join our pre-commercial sales phase, test, and co-develop the right solution for their needs,” says Tarja Heikkilä, Product Manager at Muoto. “Our Muoto punnets are durable, plastic-free, fully recyclable, and meet the strict requirements of the upcoming PPWR regulation. As the new legislation will most likely come into effect in 2030, this is the prime time to start testing other solutions for packing fresh products.”
The new Muoto punnets are manufactured from renewable fresh wood pulp and designed to be fully recyclable and biodegradable. The innovative production technology converts wet wood pulp directly into 3D shapes without intermediate steps, ready for delivery to the end customer. Muoto combines effortless moulding with a design that is lightweight, sturdy and strong.
