SIRIUS by Ecoocel wins at the 2025 Liderpack Awards

The 2025 Liderpack Awards have once again put the spotlight where the market needs it most: on real, scalable, sustainable solutions that transform the packaging experience from the shelf to end of life. Among this year’s winners is SIRIUS, the sandwich pack from Ecoocel (Grupo Tav Food), recognized for its value proposition: heat-sealable, biodegradable, and compostable, with a design that extends product shelf life and delivers tangible advantages for retail and foodservice operations.

What are the Liderpack Awards and why are they the industry’s thermometer?

Liderpack is Spain’s leading competition specializing in packaging and POP (Point of Purchase) displays. It is organized by AES Packaging – Graphispack Asociación and Hispack trade fair (Fira de Barcelona), with a multidisciplinary jury assessing originality, ergonomics, innovation, creativity, design, manufacturing process, materials, and sustainability. Beyond honoring the year’s best solutions, the contest acts as a passport to international recognition by selecting entries to represent Spain at the WorldStar Packaging Awards (World Packaging Organisation, WPO) and, in parallel, university projects for WorldStar Student.

The 2025 edition honored 31 companies for proposals that show the market’s maturity toward circular, efficient solutions. In numbers, the jury granted 47 awards in Packaging, 15 in POPAI–PLV, and 18 in the Young Design category, consolidating Liderpack as the national barometer for creativity, functionality, and environmental commitment.

SIRIUS: the sandwich pack that sets the standard

SIRIUS was created to solve a complex equation: product preservation + operational efficiency + measurable sustainability. In its decision, the organization highlighted its heat-sealability, biodegradability, and compostability, and its ability to extend sandwich shelf life, a key attribute to reduce in-store waste and improve the consumer experience.

From Ecoocel, Grupo Tav Food’s sustainability brand, SIRIUS is presented as a new generation of sandwich packaging that raises the bar for eco-innovation. It ensures exclusivity and protection of the innovation and strengthens the company’s position as a technological benchmark in the category.

What makes SIRIUS different?

  • Responsible materials: A design based on natural fibers and compostable solutions that facilitate end-of-life recovery compared with complex multimaterial structures.
  • Seal and freshness barrier: Heat-sealability provides a secure, consistent closure suitable for high-throughput operations, with benefits for shelf life and food safety.
  • In-store efficiency: A format optimized for display and handling on shelf; its stability and visibility improve facing and reduce restocking times. (Reasoned inference based on heat-seal and sandwich-format attributes in retail.)
  • Traceability and ESG proposition: SIRIUS aligns with Grupo Tav Food’s sustainability and circular economy roadmap, deploying the Ecoocel brand in response to demand for compostable and recyclable alternatives with real impact.

The importance of this Award, beyond the trophy

Recognition at Liderpack doesn’t just celebrate design; it validates industrial feasibility. The 2025 edition spotlighted unmistakable trends: reduction of virgin plastics, monomateriality where viable, compostable and recyclable solutions, and operational improvements that enhance point-of-sale productivity.

The juries highlighted developments that replace grouping films with board, pursue reuse in leisure contexts, and explore ultralight recycled-material sleevings—context in which SIRIUS stands out for tackling food waste via longer shelf life and for offering a compostable pathway for a high-turnover packaging type.

For manufacturers and retailers, this translates into three impacts:

  1. Operational: SIRIUS’s heat-sealability and design enable predictable, scalable processes—essential for prep hubs and stores with demand peaks.
  2. Economic: More shelf life = less shrink, a KPI that directly affects the P&L of the sandwich category. (Reasoned inference based on the noted increase in shelf life.)
  3. ESG & brand: Adopting compostable packs with traceability and certifications strengthens brand positioning and alignment with 2030 objectives. Grupo Tav Food integrates these levers into its ESG roadmap and Ecoocel strategy.

SIRIUS in Ecoocel’s strategy: design for end of life

At Ecoocel we uphold a simple idea: the best package is the one that fulfills its function with the least possible impact across its entire life cycle. SIRIUS exemplifies this philosophy by combining food protection, logistics efficiency, and a responsible end-of-life route (compostability) in a single development.

  • Design for recyclability/compostability: Reduce unnecessary layers and prioritize fiber solutions with compatible sealing.
  • Material optimization: Fewer grams per functional unit without compromising rigidity and seal. (Principles reflected in Grupo Tav Food’s sustainability strategy.)
  • Clear user communication: Iconography and messaging that encourage proper sorting and recovery. (Industry best practices aligned with trends highlighted by Liderpack 2025.)

From Liderpack to WorldStar: international projection

A key value of Liderpack is its connection with the WorldStar Packaging Awards, the sector’s leading global showcase. Winning and jury-selected projects in Spain compete internationally, accelerating adoption and providing benchmarks for new developments. For SIRIUS, this recognition strengthens its scalability potential with European retail chains and foodservice operators seeking compostable, high-performance solutions.

Rewarding what changes the market

The 2025 Liderpack Awards confirm that sustainability is now synonymous with performance. SIRIUS, by Ecoocel (Grupo Tav Food), represents a market-ready solution that addresses real problems—shrink, freshness, efficiency, and end of life—with ecodesign criteria and innovation protection. It is exactly the type of packaging the sector needs to accelerate the transition toward a truly circular economy.

We will continue working with our clients to scale SIRIUS and other Ecoocel solutions that improve environmental footprint without compromising quality or competitiveness.
