Each year, nearly 78 million tons of plastic are used worldwide for food packaging.
Of this amount, around 50 million tons of plastic waste end up in nature.
In Europe, flexible plastics (films, bags and plastic boxes) represent about 50% of food packaging waste, and their recycling rate remains very low compared with bottles or rigid containers.
In response to this challenge, several international initiatives have emerged.
Under the leadership of the United Nations,” the Global Plastics Treaty project” represents the first attempt to establish a worldwide regulatory framework to combat plastic pollution.
