Alongside strong household cleaning products it is primarily medicines that can be dangerous to inquisitive children. Tablet boxes featuring innovative materials, creative closure options and complex, child-proof opening mechanisms are aimed at preventing the young access to dangerous medicines – while making them easy to use for those in older years.

Swiss company Rondo in collaboration with the French technology group A.C.D. has managed to develop packaging that prevents the tablets being taken out by small children even after initial opening. Due to the flexible arrangement of tablet sizes and numbers the innovative folding box care of the Solida product range is also easy to use for the elderly at the same time.

Solely due to a mechanism integrated into the folding box the tablets can be pressed out of the packaging individually. Activation requires the use of both hands: by sliding a button to the side and holding it in place at the same time the tablet can be removed. Once the operation is completed the slide automatically springs back into to its original position. This ensures the box is still child-proof even after initial opening because children’s motor skills are generally not developed enough to operate a mechanism of this kind.

With Stora Enso’s new product for child-proofing medicine packaging it is not so much the technology but more the innovative material mix that makes it so effective because it is particularly tear-resistant. Together with other safety features the paper packaging increases protection against improper use. The Finno-Swedish company also looks to the use of eco-friendly paper in the form of Ensocard Resilience. The recyclable cellulose is coated with PET making it resistant to external influences. This means the tailor-made packaging material offers the greatest efficiency and in terms of ruggedness it is in no way inferior to medicine packaging made of plastic.

Specialised in closures of all kinds the company Bericap is dedicated, amongst other things, to child-safe packaging solutions. Featuring a tamper-proof closure tape for bottles and tubes each packaging is protected against opening while children are protected and safe use is guaranteed to parents. Opening the tape does not require any particular strength and is also elderly-friendly.
