Our ice cream packaging for 2020
It’s not easy to choose from among the huge range of diverse ice cream packaging in the frozen aisle. We’re happy to help: we present the best ice cream packaging for 2020 here.
Ice cream is beloved by old, young and dogs alike. Come again? You read right: in addition to scoops, lollies and cornets, there’s also ice cream for dogs that pet owners can create themselves, with pre-mixed ice cream mixtures that come in pots with supplied ice cream moulds and ice lolly sticks. For humans, it’s a little easier. Simply head to the ice cream section of the supermarket, kiosk or garage and grab a refreshing treat.
Many of us do just this, meaning that the sales volumes for household packs for consumption at home or multi-packs containing several flavours for private use, has constantly increased over the past few years, according to market research institute statistics. On average, Germans consumed 8.3 litres of ice cream per capita in 2019. That amounts to 119 scoops. Consumers love the classics but are also keen to try new flavours, ice creams with less sugar or purely vegan ice cream.
COCONUT MILK ICE CREAM
The name says it all: Coconut Bliss – clearly, coconut is the prime feature here. The founders of Coconut Bliss, Luna Marcus and Larry Kaplowitz, wanted to create a vegan ice cream without any milk and, after performing test runs with soya and rice milks, hit on coconut milk. They only use agave syrup to sweeten this plant-based ice cream. The company has also carried the plant theme through to its packaging, and (according to their own statements) was the first ice cream manufacturer to use a biopolymer made of sugar cane for the coating of their paper tubs, which they have been implementing since 2019.

MY/MO SINGLE SERVE MOCHI
A scoop of ice cream encased in rice dough - that’s already something pretty special in itself, at least outside the Asian continent. Now, My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream, an ice cream manufacturer from Los Angeles, is working hard again to be the coolest in the cold confectionery market. Since June 2020, these frosty ice cream spheres have now also become available in the USA as individual portions in snack packs in tasty flavours such as Strawberry, Sweet Mango and Cookies & Cream, not just in the 6-pack format that has been on the market for a long time. Recyclable polyethylene packaging in 1.62 x 2.65 inch format was produced in a new layout for this. The American company states that the advantages of the individual portion packages include improved hygiene standards and less food loss and/or food waste. These packs also apparently save 20% material in their production.

PACKAGING FOR CLASSIC ICE CREAMS
We simply couldn’t leave the great classics out of our 2020 ice cream packaging run-down. 60 years ago, the first batch of Langnese vanilla ice cream rolled off the conveyor belt in April 1960 in a German factory in Heppenheim, which was the modernest ice cream factory in Europe at that point in time. Today, around 3,000 popular Langnese ice cream items are packaged there every day.

AHOI - A NOSTALGIC VIBE FOR THIS ICE CREAM PACKAGING
Ahoi sherbet is also available as a canned sherbet beverage, as classic sherbet powder in a sachet and also as sherbet sweets and has also been available as a sherbet ice cream since 2020. Fruity raspberry ice cream joins forces with woodruff ice cream, refined with citron sauce and fizzy pearls of Ahoi sherbet. Anyone who loved sherbet powder as a child won’t be able to tear themselves away from the colourful, nostalgic Ahoi ice cream packaging with its friendly sailor. That’s not all: As ice cream is always more delicious when you’re enjoying it with a friend, the new Ahoi ice cream tubs are available as a double pack.

NETFLIX AND CHILL
Who hasn’t accidentally finished a whole tub of ice cream while they were watching a fantastic film? All of us have done it. Ben&Jerry’s know this feeling all too well, and without further ado they brought out a new variety that they named after the USA media company Netflix. It’s called Netflix&Chill’d and is a peanut butter ice cream with sweet and salty pretzel swirls and fudge brownies. Are the three relaxed cows on the red sofa watching a bucolic crime drama or best lawns on Netflix? We can only guess. However, this ice cream manufacturer is crystal clear on how to dispose of the packaging: Ben&Jerry’s ice cream tubs belong in the paper bin.

PROTEIN ICE CREAM
The Protami protein ice cream is also included on our 2020 list of best ice cream packaging. Athletes and the health-conscious are the target demographics for this ice cream. It is made without any added sugar, has a high protein content and was created in Munich in 2014. It contains five times more protein and five times less sugar when compared to normal milk ice cream, as the only sugars contained in it are fructose and lactose. All packaging is made of paper and is recyclable.

ICE CREAM FOR YOUR DOG
On dog days that reach over 30°C, why should humans be the only ones to enjoy ice cream? This was the thought that the manufacturers of Smoofl ice cream, along with others, hit on. The Belgian company Smoofl offers ice cream in several flavours, from strawberry to peanut butter to coconut - there’s no meat flavour! Pet owners can create ice cream for their four-legged friends themselves using the pre-mixed ice cream mixtures packed into tubs. Preparing them is easy: Whisk the mixture together with water, pour it into the silicone paw print moulds, insert the supplied lolly sticks and let them freeze overnight. This refreshing treat is now ready for your pampered pooch.
