Light-sensitive pharmaceutical substances may break down when they are exposed to UV radiation, which can have a negative impact on the effect and shelf-life of a medication. This is why production lines are often converted from LED to amber lighting when packing medication that is particularly sensitive to UV radiation. This ensures that the pharmaceutical product is protected and maintains its high quality, however, switching product lines takes up precious time. US pharmaceuticals company PCI Pharma Services plans to implement UV-free LED lighting at its plant, thus ensuring more cost-efficient production.
UV-FREE LED LAMPS
For some years now, medication manufacturers have increasingly been using cost-efficient LED and fluorescent lighting in their packaging plants. However, they have found that storing medication under LED lighting causes changes in quality. This is why amber lighting, as opposed to conventional LED lighting, is now used when packing ultraviolet-sensitive (UV-sensitive) medication. However, this requires time-intensive conversions between individual production lines. A new solution promises to improve these conditions by lighting packaging rooms with special, UV-free LED lamps. This also makes switching to amber lighting unnecessary.
Innovative labels prevent damaging effect of UV radiation
In order to protect particularly sensitive medication against UV radiation and light, manufacturers can now also use innovative labels that provide various levels of safety. Currently, sensitive medication and active pharmaceutical agents are often packed in either aluminium blister packs or in amber and transparent tablet bottles, with a corresponding warning label. This, however, has the disadvantage that it is no longer possible to identify potential discolourations of the compound.
Transparent inspection windows that provide UV protection as well as semi-transparent, resealable inspection windows for individual vessels can be aligned with the specific light requirements of the individual active agents and reliably protect against light and UV radiation.
UV absorbers protect sensitive foods and beverages against UV radiation.
UV absorbers for PET packaging
Health-conscious consumers are increasingly calling for foods and beverages made with natural ingredients, without adding chemical flavours and colouring. As a result, more and more products are sensitive to UV light, which is why foods and beverages increasingly use PET packaging with integrated UV absorbers. Milliken, a chemicals company, has introduced a corresponding packaging solution for UV-sensitive products. According to company statements, the ClearShield absorbers for PET packaging filter UV light at a wave length of up to 390 nanometres and are effective at extremely low loadings. They are also easy to handle and to dispense.
