Packaging of Tomorrow: How the New Generation Thinks

New generation, new ideas: A group of young talents is emerging in the packaging industry, bringing a fresh perspective, curiosity and a strong drive to shape the future. For the second part of our survey, we asked our six Young Talents – who will also be present at interpack 2026 - which trends and technologies they believe will define the future of the packaging industry. 

“For the future, I see more sustainable materials and the circular economy as key trends. At the same time, I believe that artificial intelligence will play an increasingly important role in production processes – from data analysis and quality control to intelligent learning systems such as Schubert’s tog robot, which can ‘see’ what it needs to do thanks to AI.”

“AI is being used more and more to simplify workflows and the structure of various processes as much as possible. This can lead to strong future solutions – even in areas where no research has been done before. At the same time, some of these approaches may still be underdeveloped or based on assumptions that may not be realistic in practice.”

“I see artificial intelligence and automation as the most futureshaping developments. They are essential for maintaining innovation leadership, making processes more efficient and ensuring stable quality. Specifically, AI applications such as predictive maintenance, visual quality inspection and databased process optimization enable fewer downtimes, less waste and lower resource consumption.” 

“I consider the trend towards increasing environmental compatibility in the packaging industry to be very important. Packaging is typically a disposable product. The lower the environmental impact during disposal, the better. It will be exciting to see what material research will deliver in the coming years. 

Moreover, in my opinion, the influence of digital technologies on the packaging world – especially in the food sector – primarily begins with the packaging machines. The ongoing development of smart automation components enables a more decentralized electrical design. This will allow machines to be constructed even more modularly in the future, enabling operators to switch between products more quickly.”
