2025 Sustainability Report Released: Rossmann Optimizes Packaging for Improved Recyclability
Packagingisincreasinglybecoming a focusofsustainabilitystrategies – including at thedrugstorechain Rossmann. The company’scurrentapproach: reduced material use, higherrecycledcontent, and improvedrecyclability. In itslatest 2025 Sustainability Report, Dirk Rossmann GmbH outlineshowitisaddressingpackagingoptimization.
How much recycled content is in Rossmann’s packaging?
67 percent of Rossmann’s own label packaging (by weight) now consists of at least 95 percent recyclable materials. Rossmann has also made progress in increasing the share of recycled content: last year, recycled materials accounted for 41 percent of plastic packaging and an average of 45 percent across all materials. These figures show that targeted system-level changes can make a tangible impact.
The goal is improved sortability and easier reintegration into the recycling loop. In specific applications – such as bottles from Rossmann‘s private label eco Freude – fully recycled plastics are already being used. The result: savings of around 72 tons of virgin plastic in 2024.
Why Are Mono-Materials Key to the Circular Economy?
Also relevant for the industry: the focus on mono-materials is being significantly expanded. According to Rossmann’s Sustainability Report, the goal is to increase their use in order to enhance recyclability.
In addition to materials, functional and communicative aspects are also coming into focus. Rossmann’s own “Formulation Without Microplastics”label now marks more than 1,500 product formulations – an indication that packaging and contents are increasingly being considered together.
