Why Recycling Matters So Much to Consumers
Reading time: 1 Minute
Global Recycling Day serves as an annual reminder of how important efficient recycling processes are for a truly circular economy. Current consumer studies reveal a clear trend: expectations for sustainable packaging are rising – and they are influencing purchasing decisions more strongly than ever.
According to the latest European Consumer Packaging Perceptions Survey by Pro Carton, 64 percent of people in Europe say that recyclability is the most important factor when it comes to packaging. For many, it has become a central driver of trust in products and brands. At the same time, expectations increasingly translate into concrete behavior: nearly six out of ten Europeans recycle more household waste today than a few years ago, and 62 percent consider recycling one of the most effective measures against climate change.
Which types of packaging are most in demand?
Fiber‑based packaging such as cartonboard is particularly sought after and trusted most by consumers when it comes to recycling. When given a choice, many deliberately opt for materials that can easily stay within the circular system.
Despite rising living costs, sustainability remains an important factor for many people: affordability and environmental awareness are not mutually exclusive but are increasingly seen as interdependent.
Global Recycling Day ultimately highlights one key insight: those who choose circular solutions are not only making an ecological decision but also meeting the expectations of a large share of consumers.
