With the SQUIX series cab further develops the successful A+ printers. The printer types for a maximum of 4“ print width are now added by models for 6“ applications. Hermes C - two-color print and apply

Print and apply systems: Questions to Mario Hiss

Why are the Hermes print and apply systems in automated manufacturing processes that successful?
In addition to the robust design, this is mainly because of the modular design. The system is basically split into a print unit and the applicator. Both of them can be combined depending upon individual needs. We offer as standard two different unwinding diameters for the print units and all systems in a left or right hand version. A wide range of accessories and different floor stands are available to allow flexibility in installation. This facilitates both the integration in already existing and simplifies the project planning of new production lines. Hermes systems turn out to be a safe investment for the future. And, if requirements should change, such as the product to be marked or the size of the label, its modular design can be individually adapted.

Is the wide range of applicators a selling point?
Yes, definitely! I have been at cab for 18 years. From my personal experience I can tell you that most of our customers do not ask about the “whether” any more. They know us and simply expect us to provide an economic solution for their application tasks. Global presence of our standardized products and their availability in particular with country-specific approvals is becoming a major issue.  Our current range is ideal for almost every requirement. No matter whether the label needs to be automatically pressed, rolled or blown on the product, applied as corner-wrap label, on round material such as cables or tubes, in motion or not – we have the ability to offer the right product for almost any application.

What are the factors deciding upon the system’s correct configuration?
Our first step is to analyze the label printing. The special demands on the print image allow us to select the perfect print width and to choose a rather fast or high-resolution print unit. Applications with 2D traceability in particular are focusing on the print quality. Of course, cycle time of the production or packaging line has great influence. If you remove the time the label is printed from the total cycle time, there is usually not much time left to apply the label. Here, the decisive factor is, whether the product is in motion or not at the time it is labeled and from which side the label is applied onto the product. Every field or industrial sector has specific requirements on the quality of the label and has different conditions related to the automation. Our job is to perform a comprehensive evaluation of all these factors. Based on this assessment, we apply the requirements to the specifications of our printers and peripherals and finally make a recommendation on the perfect system to the customer.

How does Hermes C differ from Hermes+?
Initially, our successful XC printer series for two-color label printing served as template. Print on demand without a blank label has not yet been implemented in XC devices, however this is an all deciding argument for labeling as there label backfeed is required. Hermes C means the on-going development of our XC and Hermes+ series – not only, but especially for two-color applications in the sector of dangerous goods, the so-called GHS labels. Combined with our peripherals widely differing packages such as pallets, drums, buckets, cans and bottles may be labeled.

Label printers EOS: Questions to Thomas Rudolphi

What do users expect from a label printer?
For the most part this depends on the application and requirements. Before developing the EOS printers we asked customers in various lines of business: What are your demands? What we often heard was that the printer needs to be small in size because little footprint is available for operation. Yet the device should as well provide the features of a large industrial printer that usually has bigger functionality. A deficiency that comes with many smaller printers. In case of alternating staff effortless setup, intuitive operation and easy maintenance were also important. All in all label printers were demanded having a simple outer design but with interior features not offered by other manufacturers.

What kind of flexibility do EOS printers stand for?
There should be no wishes left open! If you have multi-track labels, for example, the label sensor can be adjusted to the correct sensing position. In case of processing bigger label rolls an external unwinder is offered. Just click this in at the rear side of the printer, insert the material as usual and … here we go! No additional tool is necessary. If you know from the beginning that bigger label rolls shall be processed it could make sense to directly choose an EOS 4 model. It has a bigger chassis than the EOS1 which means that there is more space available to insert the label roll. Both printer versions may be complemented with an accessorial cutter to reliably separate the labels. An additional brake is available if fanfold material has to be processed with constant tension.

Is this flexibility also applicable to device control?
Absolutely! Presumed there is a network connection, its associated access options allow remote operation with EOS printers. Even the display shows up and can be used like a remote control from the PC. Or you can work autonomous without a PC connected. At this, the labels are recalled from the internal memory, added with data and finally printed. Ports to connect a standard PC keyboard or a barcode scanner are self-evident.

How do EOS printers prevent from secondary costs?
EOS printers can be expanded with standard components. It is not necessary to buy expensive special equipment. Take consumables as an example. With the ribbons you have free choice because EOS printers have been designed for standard cores. Both inside or outside wound materials can be used. Because of the clever control mechanism each colored ribbon can be used. This makes the handling of these printers calculable. As a warning counterexample just think of low-cost inkjet printers: The devices might be cheap but it gets expensive when it comes to exchanging the ink cartridge.

Label printers MACH1/MACH2: Questions to Dirk Roland

Why have small-sized printers been added to the range of cab products?
For many years we have been established in the development and manufacture of industrial printers, as well as niche solutions such as two-color printing, double-sided printing and printing on textile and continuous materials. With the desktop printers MACH1 and MACH2 we complete our printer range in the lower price segment.   

What had been the major requirement in development?
We felt it was important to offer our customers the reliability usually known of cab, easy handling and a good-looking design combined in a small device, presented as MACH1. With the MACH2 we offer a printer type that has a colored display and the cab navigator pad already integrated. All at competitive prices.

What are the fields of application?
Both MACH printers weigh less than three kilos each and require little footprint. This makes them fit for use in limited spaces and wherever labels have to be printed on-site at different places. We particularly think of the retailers’ demand for small duty applications, with a large industrial printer oversized compared to the needs. Its low-noise printing suits the MACH1 and MACH for personal use in the office as well.

Label printers SQUIX: Questions to Alexander Bardutzky

What has been the focus of attention in the further development of cab’s industrial printers?

We manufacture and sell our established A+ printers for more than eight years. The requirements set by the market steadily increase, Advanced Manufacturing resp. the Internet of Things are key topics. The intelligence of the devices is becoming more and more important. With the firmware architecture of the SQUIX printers we already supply future opportunities. 

How do SQUIX printers allow for Advanced Manufacturing?

Our understanding of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is that mechanical and electrical engineering interacts with the latest information and communication technologies. To ensure optimum and safe processes, interfaces and protocols compliant to Advanced Manufacturing are needed. Integration can be simplified by making use of currently establishing standards such as OPC UA and MQTT. As for the SQUIX, the Ethernet and WLAN interfaces offer the basis to bi-directionally exchange information with master networks, production planning, PLC and other administration tools, data transfer from external databases and centered monitoring of the data transaction. Via the web interface it is possible to set the printer, read out information and observe the display output.

How do the industrial printers integrate in control processes?

In order to integrate in a higher-level control process the devices provide an I/O interface. So printing can be started or interrupted via a PLC, a sensor or a hand switch. At the same time, status and warning messages are issued to the higher-level control, pointing out for example on the upcoming end of ribbon or interruption of the labeling.

What about operational habits?

Operational habits are highly relevant! SQUIX printers feature a colored 4.3“ LCD display with touchscreen function. The user interface is smartphone-like with direct access to individual menu items. Explanatory videos can be played on the display and support the user in handling the device.
