Operational excellence with SuperTrak

At this year's interpack (Booth E62, Hall 6), B&R will be showcasing SuperTrak – a versatile, intelligent conveyor system that represents a key contribution to Packaging 4.0. This smart manufacturing revolution promises CPG producers unprecedented levels of OEE and reduced TCO.

SuperTrak is a new generation of robust, operator-friendly intelligent conveyor technology based on long-stator linear motors. Unlike similar systems available thus far, it offers true industrial-grade reliability and easy serviceability. Its independently-controlled shuttles allow mass production of highly customized products, while also minimizing time lost on stoppages and product changeover.

Line monitoring based on PackML – B&R makes it easy

With just a few mouse clicks, a convenient line monitoring system can be implemented using the APROL process and factory automation system from B&R. The solution is based on OMAC's PackML standard, which can be applied to virtually any machine.

High performance with a compact design

The ACOPOS P3 three-axis servo drive
With a power density of 4 amps per liter of space, this innovative system is the most efficient servo drive with integrated safety functions available on the market. Previously unobtainable dynamics and precision: The sampling time is just 50 µs for the entire controller cascade.

Space requirements reduced by 69%
The ACOPOS P3 is offered as a 1, 2 or 3-axis drive and covers a power spectrum ranging from 0.6 to 24 kW, or 1.2 to 48 amps. The housing of the three-axis drive is as small as a conventional one-axis drive, making it possible to reduce the amount of space required in the control cabinet by 69%.

Taking virtual sensor technology to the next dimension
The short cycle time of 50 µs for current, speed and position control open up new possibilities for virtual sensor technology. A virtual motor position encoder does away with the need for an encoder, encoder cable and evaluation unit in the servo drive while increasing availability at the same time. Other special functions for more precise control and faster reactions – repetitive control, for example – can be implemented using virtual sensor technology.

Safety included
The ACOPOS P3 fits seamlessly into B&R's modular and fully scalable automation portfolio, allowing the creation and implementation of especially lean automation solutions. A Power Panel, any number of ACOPOS servo drives and X20 I/O modules are all that is needed to set up a complete and extremely powerful automation solution. Safety functions in accordance with SIL 3 / PL e can also be integrated upon request. Safely Limited Torque (SLT) and Remanent Safe Position (RSP) functions are new additions compared to previous ACOPOS models. And with a total of 14 safe motion functions based on openSAFETY, it is possible to satisfy all possible safety demands in an optimal way.

The ACOPOS P3 can be used anywhere in the world thanks to its support for the world's most common power mains configurations, such as TN, TT, IT and corner grounded TN-S systems. This also reduces the overall number of machine variants needed.

The perfect motor for any application

B&R is adding two new sizes to its standard series of servo motors

B&R is adding two new sizes to its 8LS series of servo motors. Size A offers extremely high torque with a flange size of 70 mm and an extremely compact design, while size 9 rounds off the upper end of the performance spectrum with up to 75 kW of power. Both of these options make it possible for machine manufacturers and system integrators to adapt motors betters to actual requirements.

More performance for specific applications
Compact size A motors are the perfect choice where high torque density is needed in a very tight footprint. The fully sealed stator allows a high degree of efficiency as well as high continuous torque. With a maximum torque of up to 1,000 Nm, size 9 motors open up entirely new applications with high demands on power and dynamics. They can be combined with any of B&R's many gearbox options and shipped as pre-assembled motor-gearbox combinations.

Safety included
All motors from the 8LS series are offered with an optional digital encoder and scalable safety functions. Motors up to size 7 are also available with B&R's robust single-cable solution, which combines the cables for the motor and encoder. This reduces cabling to a minimum and substantially reduces installation costs

High-performance control, even with a sine wave filter

B&R upgrades current control loop for ACOPOS P3 servo drives

B&R has upgraded the current control loop for ACOPOS P3 servo drives. Users can implement a sine wave filter without negatively affecting drive control performance. This gives machines the advantages of a sine wave filter while the ACOPOS P3 retains its usual high performance.

Better efficiency
By converting the voltage signal from a square waveform to a largely sinusoidal one, sine wave filters help improve energy efficiency, reduce strain on the motor and decrease electromagnetic noise on the motor cable. They also smooth out the current curve, which reduces both acoustic noise and motor losses. The overall efficiency of the servo drive is thus improved.

High overall performance
The ACOPOS P3 takes the characteristic curve of the sine wave filter into account, allowing the full bandwidth of the current control loop to be utilized and ensuring that it is stable and robust. B&R thus ensures high overall performance of the ACOPOS P3.

In some circumstances, other manufacturers require the current control loop to be operated at a lower bandwidth when using a sine wave filter in order to ensure a stable and robust control results. This has a negative effect on servo drive performance.

Process control in the cloud

Secure global data access with B&R APROL

It will soon be possible to install and run APROL in the cloud. With data and reports generated by the process control system available anywhere in the world, geographically dispersed teams can collaborate with remarkable efficiency.

APROL can be installed on virtual machines offered by any well-established cloud hosting company. A local APROL installation performs preprocessing and compression, so that only significant data is transmitted to the cloud database. This approach, which is based on the concepts of fog and edge computing, helps keep data transfer costs to a minimum.

APROL supports the MQTT, AMQP and OPC UA protocols. An unlimited number of local APROL nodes can send data to the central cloud-based APROL installation. Reports from the business intelligence solutions in local and cloud-based APROL installations can be opened via a REST API.

Maximum safety
The system architecture with local APROL nodes and one cloud installation ensures maximum plant security while at the same time making all of APROL's analysis, reporting and business intelligence functions available via the cloud.

Centralized data management allows all information to be accessed remotely from anywhere in the world. Database content can be analyzed using data mining tools offered by the cloud service provider.

Efficient engineering
Cloud-based APROL solutions provide access to all of APROL's concurrent engineering features, so users with development teams distributed around the world can complete large projects with maximum efficiency

Versatile panel technology for easy maintenance

B&R presents the Automation Panel 1000

B&R is expanding its Automation Panel family with a new series of widescreen formats from 7" HD to 24" Full HD. Automation Panel 1000 devices offer easy and flexible mounting options.  The slender design is available with a single-touch or multi-touch screen. Adding a PC unit turns an Automation Panel into a full-fledged Panel PC with scalable processing power.

Flexible use with all product series
The core component is the panel itself, which is available in widescreen variants ranging from 7" WVGA to 24" Full HD. Adding a modular SDL/DVI receiver makes it an operator terminal. When using SDL3 digital signal transmission technology, it is even possible to bridge more than 100 meters between terminal and PC.  Standard Ethernet cables are used. Panel PCs offer scalable computing power from Intel Atom up to Core i7.

Easy maintenance
The modular platform – consisting of panel, SDL/SDL3 receiver and PC unit delivers a considerable reduction in maintenance costs. In the event of an upgrade, there is no need to replace the entire Panel PC. With a uniform interface, B&R has established a flexible system platform for future PC architectures. Since the display and PC components are separate, it is possible to upgrade the PC technology and keep the display unit.

No access for unauthorized users

Easily and securely manage users and roles in OPC UA

The new user role system in the B&R Automation Studio software development environment simplifies management of OPC UA access rights. This feature prevents unauthorized users from accessing an OPC UA system, modifying data or performing certain actions.

Any number of roles can be defined, which can then be assigned individual access rights for each node. Typical access rights include reading, writing or browsing. It is even possible to completely hide a node so that it is invisible to members of a specific role group. To make configuration even easier, the rights of a parent node can be inherited by its children.

User role system
A user is assigned one or more roles, with additional protection provided by an encrypted password. The user role system can also be updated during operation. This includes, for example, assigning a username and password to a new system operator. These functions are available directly in the application program on the controller using function blocks.

Security with certificates
In order to ensure secure and trusted data exchange, digital certificates in accordance with the X.509 standard can be used in the OPC UA system. The Transport Layer Security (TLS) subsystem in Automation Studio and Automation Runtime support the management of these certificates. Certificates can be displayed, created and transferred to the certificate store on the OPC UA server.

B&R presents new series of Mobile Panels

B&R has added three new mobile units to its HMI portfolio. The Mobile Panel 7100 series of handheld HMI units stands out with an exceptionally ergonomic, light and shockproof design. These new models are B&R's answer for applications in harsh industrial environments that require the performance of an industrial PC.

Optimal display
The new Mobile Panels are available in a range of sizes. The 7140 and 7150 feature a 7" WSVGA and 10.1" WXGA display, respectively. Both of them use the innovative mapp View HMI software. The 7151 model has a 10.1" display and runs a Windows-based operating system.

Robust design for harsh industrial environments
Mobile Panels make optimum use of limited space, featuring an integrated touch screen as well as dedicated keys for frequently used functions. Operating elements like the key switch and stop button are recessed in the rounded, double-walled housing able to absorb hard impacts. reACTION: Turbo-charged safety technology

B&R reACTION technology for ultrafast safety applications

B&R is heralding a breakthrough in response times for safety technology. reACTION technology achieves safety response times down to 100 µs.

With this advancement, B&R is extending the use of reACTION technology into the area of safety applications. This technology makes it possible for time-critical subprocesses to be executed directly in the I/O modules, which reduces response times by a factor of 100 or more. What's more, no expensive special hardware is needed to use reACTION technology, and programming is just as easy as it is for conventional control solutions.

Relief for controller and network
The reACTION module handles a portion of the processing, relieving both the controller and the network and in many cases allowing them to be scaled down. In most cases, the resulting savings more than outweigh the added cost of the reACTION modules.
