Safety solutions for the packaging industry

The new safety installation systems from Schmersal fulfil the key requirements of Industry 4.0 / IIoT. They offer considerably more diagnostic information and extreme flexibility. A particular benefit is that different electronic safety switchgear systems, such as sensors and interlocks, can be mixed and connected in the relevant application. Especially with larger systems, different machine areas often need to be secured using different safety switches. The passive installation systems can also be fitted with an optional “Serial Diagnosis” (SD) interface for the transfer of non-secure data. Safety sensors and interlocks connected in series and fitted with an SD interface can transfer extensive diagnostics data via the SD gateway and a fieldbus to a controller, e.g. status data or error messages. This enables quick problem solving. Overall, the safety installation system allows simpler, more accurate and cost-effective installation of safety switchgear, especially for complex machines and systems.

The complete range: hygiene-compliant safety technology

Schmersal developed the N-range specifically for hygiene-sensitive applications in the food and packaging industry and at interpack 2017, it will be showcasing the new innovations added to this extensive range of hygiene-compliant safety components. These include, for example, the new NK cross switches which have a hygiene-compliant design, making them perfect for the food-processing industry. They also have highs degree of protection: IP69K for the front plate and IP67 for the contact chamber. This means the devices are suitable for cleaning with strong jets of water or pressure washers.

Safety services for machine manufacturers and operators

tec.nicum offers all machine manufacturers and machine operators product and manufacturer-neutral consultancy on all aspects of machine safety and supports them in ensuring their machines and workplaces are designed to comply with the relevant standards.

For machine safety, a whole array of standards and regulations have to be taken into consideration. This is a challenge, particularly for small and medium-sized companies. Here, an important aspect of tec.nicum’s performance spectrum is the tec.nicum academy: It offers a comprehensive programme providing details about directives and standards in general as well as in application-specific contexts.

Individual consultation regarding currently applicable legislation as well as the selection of protective equipment conforming with the relevant standards respectively is provided to machine manufacturers by tec.nicum consulting. Furthermore, experts from this segment perform safety-related inspections on existing machines and systems which become necessary, for example, when companies are taken over or sites are relocated. Even risk assessments that operators of machines have to carry out on a regular basis due to the latest amendment of the industrial safety regulations are included in the services offered by tec.nicum consulting. Manufacturers wishing to distribute new machines within the EU must provide evidence of CE conformity, expressed through the CE mark. The technical documentation required to do this as well as all other requisite preparations for EU declaration of conformity is likewise a service offered by tec.nicum consulting

The development of new and also the modification of existing machines and systems requires careful planning. tec.nicum engineering supports the client from the outset to develop the best possible design – even from the aspect of machine safety. Specialists in this segment accompany the whole process, from initial planning talks to the definition of requisite safety equipmentAnd to safety testing and inspection of the overall installation as well as the handover of the complete project documentation. The aim here is to create a safe working environment for all kinds of users and, at the same time, to achieve optimum productivity of the systems.

During the implementation of complex safety devices, special requirements of the respective area of industry must be taken into consideration. The experts at tec.nicum integration have built up extensive experience from projects in the packaging and food industry, automotive construction, paper manufacture, metal processing industry, chemicals and pharmaceuticals among many others. They install safety switchgear and sensors and, at the same time, take account of the demands on hygiene or explosive areas. Furthermore, they take responsibility for the configuration and assembly of optoelectronic safety products as well as parametrisation or programming of safety control systems. And, tec.nicum integration also carries out various measurements, among which are stopping time measurements as well as measurements prescribed within the scope of occupational safety on light intensity, noise, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and vibrations.

tec.nicum offers companies a global network of TÜV Rheinland-certified Functional Safety Engineers, so the services of the international tec.nicum organization can be accessed quickly and easily wherever the customer is.
