Save Food with Kuraray barrier plastics
Kuraray Co., Ltd. is the world leader in high performance barrier plastics used for food packaging, offering a wide range of products suited to virtually every application and processing method.
What's new at Interpack 2017:
All Kuraray barrier plastics provide safe halogen-free chemistry, with high enough performance to replace glass and metal with light weight, recyclable and now even compostable functional alternatives for food packaging.
- EVAL™ EVOH: The worlds first commercial and leading EVOH high barrier copolymer, available as resin for coextrusion and coinjection, and as monolayer film for lamination.
- EXCEVAL™: water soluble EVOH used for solution coating
- PLANTIC™: starch-based barrier biopolymer for compostable barrier solutions
- KURARISTER™: high barrier transparent retortable film for AlOx, SiOx and even aluminum foil replacement
Kuraray barrier plastics are used at different stages of the food product life cycle, reducing waste and environmental impact during food production, processing, transport, distribution, and at end of life.
Several products help reduce the amount of packaging materials necessary without compromising on function, helping to reach the optimal balance of packaging and performance.
News and Product Launches at Interpack 2017:
PLANTIC™ stands out as the latest addition to the Kuraray product line: a compostable biopolymer, with the high barrier function coming from renewable sources that do not compete with food chains. New PLANTIC™ CF combines PLANTIC™ barrier biopolymer technology with PBS, offering a fully compostable yet functional barrier sealant for sustainable food packaging.
KURARISTER™ is already used as a high barrier lamination film for transparent retortable applications. In addition to oxygen barrier before, during and after retort, KURARISTER™ CF provides excellent water vapour barrier as well. New advanced KURARISTER™ CI takes oxygen and moisture barrier even further, offering a clear and reliable alternative to aluminium foil for even the most depanding applications.
EVOH is usually considered a material limited to coextrusion and coinjection. But EXCEVAL™ is a water soluble EVOH suitable for solution coating, allowing reliable processing and performance notably for metallised films.
Kuraray has been manufacturing ethylene vinyl-alcohol copolymers (EVOH) under the name EVAL™ since 1972. A recently completed production expansion in Europe, followed by another in the USA in 2018 confirms EVAL™ as the world's leading EVOH in both production and global market development.
EVAL™ is commercially available in two forms: resins (plastic granules for coextrusion) and films (for lamination). The EVAL™ product line provides the world's widest available grade range, preserving quality and avoiding waste in food, medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and industrial packaging. They also help use energy more efficiently and reduce environmental impact in automotive fuel systems, building and construction materials and agricultural films. EVAL™ increasingly helps save food and avoid waste at all stages of the food product life cycle.
