First Plastic Bag Free City in Europe – Finnish NGO Providing Households with Reusable Bags for Free

The campaign of “Plastic Bag Free Kerava” – project will provide every household in the city with a reusable multiuse carrier bag made from the sustainable Paptic® material.

“Plastic bag free Kerava” - project aims to make Kerava the first plastic bag free city in Finland and in Europe. The project also aims to profile Kerava as an ecological city that takes concrete steps towards a more sustainable future and provides an example that other cities and for example malls can follow.

Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up in the nature and a large part of it is packaging. Single use plastic bags and packages have a high probability of ending up in nature. According to a recent study from WWF people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. This alarming fact has been an inspiration for the bags message and the design reads “Milloin Muutut Muoviksi?” which translates to: When will you become plastic?

- I knew from the beginning of the project that we would be working with Paptic at some point. With their material the replacement of plastics is effortless and it’s great to provide people with an alternative that is easily recycled and can be reused multiple times, says Mari Granström, the head of the project.

- Consumers are willing to use sustainable alternatives when they are brought to their attention and are readily available. The project has understood the phrase “think globally – act locally” and has done an amazing job of informing consumers. It´s hard to imagine a more concrete step forward, than providing a sustainable bag to every household in the city, says Esa Torniainen, CBDO & Co-Founder of Paptic Ltd.

WWF Finland, HOK-Elanto, Kesko, Alko, Posti, Musti ja Mirri, Sinebrychoff, Keski-Uudenmaan teatteri (KUT), Keski-Uusimaa and Kerava’s congregation are the main partners of the project. There are also other Kerava based companies involved. The city of Kerava is also committed on reducing the use of plastic bags.

Sokos says goodbye to plastic bags and welcomes a more sustainable future

Sokos, one of the largest department store chains in Finland, has decided to replace their plastic bags with reusable multiuse carrier bags made from the sustainable Paptic® Tringa material.

Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up in the environment and a large part of it is packaging. Single use plastic bags and packages have a high probability of ending up in nature. With Paptic® material Sokos will provide a reusable bag which can and should be used multiple times. The bags can be found in all Sokos and Emotion retail locations.

” The new bags made with Paptic® material are stylish, strong, multi-usable and they are design to be used several times. Even though the material resembles paper, it´s splash resistant and flexible.  The quality of the material is also signaled by the fact that the legendary French department store Galeries Lafayette have taken bags made with Paptic® material in to use. “ Says Päivi Juntunen, Director of Development at SOK.
Paptic® is a Finnish innovation that enables the replacement of plastics in a variety of packaging applications. Paptic® Tringa material is:

“ We need forerunners that make sustainable decisions. We are so proud about our collaboration with Sokos and it is great to see how Sokos truly wants to set an example with their environmental actions ” says Esa Torniainen, CBDO & Co-Founder of Paptic.

About us

Company details

Paptic Ltd was founded in 2015 in Finland to address one
of the biggest global environmental challenges, the plastic
waste accumulating in the oceans. After only 14 months
Paptic delivered their first products to the market and
since then have been increasing their capacity to meet the
needs of brand owners and retailers.

Paptic Ltd manufactures a bio based, recyclable and renewable material. Paptic® is produced at paper machines
enabling the fast growth of upscaling Paptic® production,
making it the most available bio-based alternative for
plastics.

The main aim in using Paptic® products is to decrease the
use of plastic. Plastic pollution is a worldwide problem,
which means that the whole world is within the
geographical reach of Paptic. Paptic® material can be
used in applications in a high risk of ending to the oceans.
According to the feedback from our customers and
consumers the haptic properties of products made with
Paptic® material encourage consumers to reuse them.

There is an obvious need among brand owners for a
sustainable packaging material whose environmental
friendliness can be effortlessly communicated to
consumers thus making the investment in new packaging
concepts viable. Plastic are not the choice of sustainable
brands in the future.
